The beam in the red circle is being held up by only the bolts going through it. The other one uses the whole 6x6 for support. I always use the beam-on-post method. When the beam is less thick than the post, I notch out an area for it to rest and use the tongue of the notch to add lateral support. Metal is added to the top for more stability and wind protection.
